ON COSMONAUTICS DAY, THE BRONZE BUST OF YURI GAGARIN SOLEMNLY OPENED IN THE CAPITAL OF CAMBODIA

On April 12, 2022 - on Cosmonautics Day, International Day of Human Space Flight - a solemn opening ceremony of a memorial bust of Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin was held in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh. The bronze bust by sculptor Alexei Leonov was donated to the city by the Dialogue of Cultures - One World Foundation and installed on the territory of the Cambodian Institute of Technology, built and opened with the support of the Soviet Union in the 1960s.

The opening ceremony was attended by Russian Ambassador to Cambodia Anatoly Borovik, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports Um Romney, and Director of the Cambodian Institute of Technology Po Kim Tho.

The head of the Cambodian Institute of Technology has taken the initiative to establish an office at the School of Technology to continue and strengthen bilateral cooperation, especially in the areas of research, technology and science. In response, the ambassador thanked the Foundation and the Institute of Technology for installing the bust of Yuri Gagarin and emphasized that Russia, which opened the way to space for humanity, supports global international scientific cooperation for the peaceful exploration of outer space. He expressed support for the initiative to create an office at the School of Technology to deepen scientific cooperation between Russia and Cambodia. “We believe that new generations of researchers will worthily continue the traditions of their predecessors,” the ambassador noted.
