Opening of the bust of Gagarin in Colombo (Sri Lanka)

On January 25, 2019, the opening ceremony of the first cosmonaut of the Earth Yuri Gagarin’s bust  took place at the State Library of the capital of Sri Lanka, Colombo.

The opening ceremony was attended by:

  • Colombo Mayor Rosie Senanayake,
  • Member of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, Advisor to the President of Sri Lanka on International Affairs Saman Weerasinghe,
  • Honorary Consul of the Russian Federation in the Indian city of Trivandrum Ratish Nair,
  • President of the World Association of Alumni of Russian and Soviet Universities Vladimir Chetiy,
  • Russian and foreign diplomats,
  • as well as employees of Rossotrudnichestvo, compatriots, journalists, and representatives of the public.

“The people of Sri Lanka remember Yuri Gagarin's historic visit to Ceylon in 1961 and are grateful for this gift. I am sure that the bust of Yuri Gagarin in the State Library of the Lankan capital will inspire future generations for many years, reminding us of the feat of the first man in space,” said Saman Weerasinghe.
