OPENING OF THE BUST OF GAGARIN IN ROMANIA

On April 14, 2019, the opening ceremony of a bronze bust of the first cosmonaut of the Earth, Yuri Gagarin, took place in the park named after King Michael I of Romania (Herastrau) in the capital city of Bucharest.

The ceremony was attended by officials from the Russian Embassy in Romania, staff and students of the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Bucharest, Romanian cosmonaut Dumitru Prunariu, representatives of city authorities and local residents.

Dumitru Prunariu, in his speech at the opening of the monument, emphasized that Yuri Gagarin “became a symbol of humanity and a symbol of space flight.” At the event, a photo exhibition was organized, students of language courses at the Russian Center for Science and Culture read poems about the conquest of space.

The bronze bust by sculptor Alexei Leonov has been donated to the capital of Romania by the International Charitable Public Foundation “Dialogue of Cultures – United World” as a part of a program to promote intercultural dialogue and develop friendly ties between peoples and countries.
