YURI GAGARIN’S BUST INSTALLED IN KATHMANDU

On April 24, 2019, the bust of the world’s first cosmonaut Yuri Alekseevich Gagarin was opened in the central park of Kathmandu.

The opening was timed to coincide with the 85th anniversary of the birth of the Soviet pilot-cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, the first person on Earth to fly into space. The bust of Yuri Alekseevich Gagarin was donated to the capital city of Kathmandu by the International Charitable Foundation “Dialogue of Cultures – United World”.

Pilot-cosmonaut, twice Hero of the USSR Viktor Petrovich Savinykh arrived in Nepal especially for the opening ceremony, who shared his invaluable experience of space flights and congratulated everyone present on this significant event - the installation of the monument. Then the Charge d'Affaires of the Russian Federation in Nepal, Yu. I. Yuzhaninov, addressed those present with a welcoming speech. He thanked the Nepalese leadership for the opportunity to install the monument as a unique symbol of the achievements of the USSR and the Russian Federation in the space industry.

The mayor of Kathmandu, B. S. Shakya, in turn, noted the exceptional importance of the event, which is a reflection of the strengthening of intercultural ties between the two countries - Russia and Nepal.

Also the opening attended by: Director of the Russian Center for Science and Culture (RCSC) in Kathmandu Yu. A. Androsova, President of the Society for Cooperation and Friendship with Nepal M. S. Nekrasov and other high-ranking officials of the Russian Federation and Nepal.

After the ceremonial part, a concert by Tatyana Komarova with a program dedicated to space and a festive buffet were organized for the guests at the RCSC. At the end of the event, the Russian film “Time of the First” was shown.
