Yuri Gagarin’s bust opened in Kuala-Lumpur

A bust of Yuri Gagarin was opened in the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur, on October 10, 2016. The bronze sculpture of the world’s first cosmonaut was donated to the national planetarium of Malaysia, Planetarium Negara, by the International Charity Public Fund "Dialogue of Cultures – United World".

The sculpture was opened in the framework of the Fund’s project "55 years - 55 countries", which aims at donating busts of Yuri Gagarin to countries around the world with the goal of marking the 55th anniversary of the first human flight into space and building bridges of friendship and cooperation between countries and continents.

The event was organized with the support of Rossotrudnichestvo representative office, the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Malaysia and the National Space Agency of Malaysia.

The official ceremony attracted more than 200 guests, including:

  • Deputy General Secretary of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation of Malaysia Dr. Ramzal Dambul;
  • General Director of the National Space Agency of Malaysia Dr. Nurdin Ben Ahmed;
  • Director of Planetarium Negara Anita Binti Bahari;
  • Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Malaysia Valery N. Ermolov;
  • Ambassador of Belgium in Malaysia Daniel Darjeent;
  • Ambassador of Japan in Malaysia Makio Miyagawa;
  • Ambassador of Kazakhstan in Malaysia Daniyar Sarekenov;
  • Chargé d'Affaires of the Syrian Embassy in Malaysia Mohammed T. A. Galon;
  • Ambassador of Cuba in Malaysia Ivet Fernández Hernández;
  • High Commissioner of South Africa Samkelisive Isabel Mlanga.

Speakers and honorable guests of the event addressed the audience with welcoming speeches, during which they emphasized the importance of the first human flight into space for the humankind. Mr. Ermolov spoke about the Russian science achievements in the field of space research and shared the success of the Russian-Malaysian cooperation in space. The greatest example of the countries’ cooperation in space exploration has become the flight of the first Malaysian astronaut on the Russian spacecraft in 2007.

The Fund «Dialogue of Cultures – United World» expresses its gratitude to the partners, organizers and all participants of the event.
